Tokyo 2020: Day 2 Results. Boxers, tennis players and swimmers advance further

On the second day of the Olympics, Team Belarus took part in shooting and rowing events.

Maria Martynova did not make it to the final of the 10m Air Rifle Women Event. The Belarusian scored 624.3 points (24th place) in the qualification.

The Belarusian commented on her performance in the 10m Air Rifle Event. “This is one of my best results in this discipline, so there is no reason to get upset. It is great that I was able to compete in this discipline. After all, only the best athletes can take part in the Olympic Games, and the participation in the Games is very prestigious,” Maria Martynova said.

The athlete has her sights on 50m Rifle 3 Positions. She qualified for 2020 Tokyo winning silver in the discipline at the 2019 European Shooting Championships.

The Sea Forest Waterway hosted rowing qualifications on 24 July.

Ina Nikulina and Elena Furman finished fourth in the Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls qualifications and will continue their performance in repechage at the Sea Forest Waterway on 25 July.

Belarus’ men’s coxless pair Dzmitry Furman and Siarhei Valadzko also finished fourth in the qualifying heats and will go through repechage on 25 July.

Boxer Aliaksandr Radzionau (69 kg) won his opening bout in the Men’s Welterweight against Necat Ekinci of Turkey. The Belarusian athlete will face Pat McCormack of the UK on 27 July.

Tennis player Egor Gerasimov had a successful start at Ariake Park, defeating French Gilles Simon 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opener.

Cyclist Aleksandr Riabushenko finished 66th in the Men's Individual Road Race (234km), more than 15 minutes behind winner Richard Carapaz from Ecuador.

The last event of the day for Belarusian athletes was the Women's 100m Butterfly. Anastasia Shkurdai from Brest clocked 56.99 seconds to finish seventh, advancing to the semifinal. All in all, 16 swimmers qualified for the semifinal.

“I did well,” Anastasia Shkurdai noted. “I haven’t showed under 57 seconds in a long time. It is a good result for the heats. I hope that I still have the strength and will do better. The pool in Tokyo is not too deep, which tricks you into thinking that you are swimming very fast,” she said.

She also noted that she will be able to recharge before the semifinal scheduled for early morning of 25 July.

Ilya Shymanovich clocked 59.33 seconds in the Men's 100m Breaststroke Event and advanced to the semifinal. “I showed a good result and made it into the next stage. Of course, I will try my best. My coach and I will analyze my performance. The pool is very good, it is a pleasure to compete in it. I could feel the scale of the event,” Ilya Shymanovich said after the race.
