Today on March 5, the European Athletics Championship started, according to NOC of Belarus.
On this day the athletes tried to pass the qualification in shot put and long jump events.
Julia Leontyuk and Elena Abramchuk succeeded in shot put. Leontyuk accomplished qualification at first attempt showing the result of 18.33 meters and came second through to the final. Abramchuk also made it into the leader top with the third result of 17.80 meters after the second try. The Hungarian athlete Anita Marton became the triumphant of the first round. They will be awarded during the evening program on March 7.
The Belarusian shot put athlete Pavel Lyzhin failed qualification with the result 19.30 meters and became 16th in overall ranking.
‘It’s hardly to define what came wrong. Motions were inaccurate, though just before at home everything was perfect. For the first time ever I and my counterparts competed in total group of 33 athletes – naturally such quantity of participants presupposes two subgroups. I performed the 24th after a half an hour waiting. Many a shot-putter mistook with the time to take on. Probably it explains my fiasco, yet everyone was in the same boat. Still I’m grateful to all our fans for their support. This is just a beginning, so our best results are just ahead.
Konstantin Borichevski missed the qualification in long jump and took the 10th place (7.77 meters).
