Beijing 2022. February 17 Roundup: Points for the future

The women's single skating was the major event on Thursday at the 24th Olympic Games in Beijing.

Belarusian Viktoriia Safonova tried to put up competition to the Russian figure skaters who were considered the major medal hopefuls.

In her free skate, the Belarusian did not make major mistakes and scored 184.83 points. This result placed Viktoriia in the top 15 of the Olympic tournament. Her position in the final scoreboard is 13th.

Russian’s Anna Shcherbakova captured the Olympic gold.

On 17 February, the National Speed Skating Oval hosted the Women's 1,000m in speed skating. Miho Takagi of Japan won the event clocking 1:13.19 and setting a new Olympic record.

Belarus was to field two athletes. However, Hanna Nifantava had to withdraw over a knee injury she suffered on the eve of the race. The other Belarusian, Ekaterina Sloeva, clocked 1:16.83 to place 21st.

“This is my personal best for a lowland skating rink. Indeed, there's still work to be done next season. I am going to concentrate my training on the 1,000m and 1,500m, especially 1,000m: I need to work on speed and strength. Of course, I also want to compete in a team race. Competing in all events may be good, but it's difficult. I am very pleased that I was able to qualify and compete in Beijing,” Ekaterina Sloeva said.
