It was for the 51th when the newspaper “Sports Panorama” and the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus hold the annual republican contest “10 Best Athletes, the Best coach and the best teams of the Republic of Belarus 2009”. The journalists of the newspaper “Sports Panorama” questioned 120 sports journalists of the country. 83 athletes were nominated what was the record for the 51-year long history of annual questionings of Belarusian sports correspondents.
In the end 10 best athletes of the year 2009 were named:
1. Ekaterina Karsten (Rowing) – 1002 points
2. Roman Petrushenko / Vadim Makhnev (Canoe/Kayak) – 973 points
3. Vladimir Samsonov ( table tennis) – 589 points
4. Victoria Azarenko (tennis) – 544 points
5. Denis Garazcha (Canoe/Kayak) – 503 points
6. Anastasia Novikova (weightlifting) – 387 points
7. Daria Domracheva ( biathlon) – 367 points
8. Stanuta Melitina (rhythmic gymnastics) – 278 points
9. Sergei Shundikov ( judo) – 269 points
10. Michail Grabovski ( hockey) – 186 points
The best woman-athlete of the year 2009 is Ekaterina Karsten (Rowing).
